Over the course of a typical year, The William Breman Jewish Heritage Museum offers more than 300 insightful and emotional tours to school groups from all over the Atlanta metro area and throughout the region.
The learning experience gained through the museum's exhibitions is illustrated in the words of a student who recently visited the Breman with her classmates from Richards Middle School in Lawrenceville, GA:
'Dear Mr. Lynn,
Thank you so much for sharing your story about your experiences as a Jew during the Holocaust. While you were speaking to us, I heard details and feelings that weren't described in any of the books I have read. Listening to your survivor story truly gave me a sense of the horrors inflicted on the Jews that were unfortunate enough to be part of the Holocaust. Before your speech, I had no idea how bad the conditions were in the concentration camps. You must have a very strong spirit to have been able to survive as long as you did, and to come and talk to us about the painful memories. During your story, I could almost feel your pain deep inside me, but I know I cannot even imagine how awful things were for you and your family. I deeply appreciate you taking the time to speak to us about your story, and I hope the rest of your life is long and prosperous.'
Of the dozens of letters received to date this year, one written by another student from Richards Middle School best summed up the reason these group tours are so meaningful. "Now I know that every death told a story and that every life held a victory."
Currently running at The Breman through August 31, 2003 is the exhibition Every Picture Tells a Story. Recently featured on Fox 5 Atlanta's Good Day Atlanta, The exhibit demonstrates acceptance and tolerance for differences through a collection of classic children's books and illustrations.
