When Opportunity Knocks, Yeshiva Students Answer

Yeshiva Atlanta's Advanced Placement Biology class recently took a trip to Georgia Tech to experience a scientific experiment in one of the finest science laboratories in the nation. Audra Brown, head of the Yeshiva's Science department, organized this experience for her students, with the assistance of Dr. Marion Sewer, a biology professor at Georgia Tech. The experiment involved enzymatic degradation of DNA with subsequent gel electrophoresis, and studying the resulting breakdown products. Gel electrophoresis is a technique that is used in many aspects of science that rely on DNA analysis, such as paternity testing, and forensic science.

According to Brown, the experiment was successful and gave her students, who were learning about  Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering in their AP Biology class, the opportunity to experience scientific learning from a college professor in a professional and extremely technologically advanced setting. "In retrospect, this field trip was about a lot more than observing the results of gel electrophoresis," said AP Biology junior Peter Richman. "After going to Georgia Tech, I believe the whole class felt this gave us a little taste of what life is going to be like once we leave high school and head for college campuses."

Building community starts at home

More than 80 Yeshiva Atlanta students, as well as Yeshiva staff and visiting students from Yeshiva University in New York, recently took part in a student-organized Shabbaton. Student Council presidents Eliana Leader and Ilan Tobin organized the weekend, that took place at the school. Shabbaton activities included services, Shabbat meals, z'mirot (songs), dancing, games and learning. Each of Yeshiva Atlanta's classes was responsible for designing a game that would involve everyone. The Shabbaton ended with basketball's senior night, celebrating basketball coach Rick Marcellino's 600th career win and a head-to-head victory at the last basketball game of the season. The game was then followed by a student concert and ice cream party. Everyone who participated is looking forward to the next opportunity to celebrate such a Shabbat.

Yeshiva Atlanta High School is one of Federation's local beneficiary agencies, and received an allocation of $162,869 in FY04.
