Since Mevrat's family arrived in Israel from Ethiopia, her father has been unemployed and her mother has been taking care of her four younger siblings. It is a daily challenge to find enough money for food and basic necessities, and Mevrat often arrives at school without a proper lunch. Mevrat struggles to be a good student and understands how important it is to do well in her classes, but often she needs help with her homework, and since her parents do not know Hebrew, they cannot help her.
North American Conference On Ethiopian Jewry's (NACOEJ) Limudiah Program provides Mevrat and 1,000 other Ethiopian elementary school students with the educational assistance that they need to compete as equals with their classmates. The Limudiah gives each student intensive assistance in reading, mathematics, and general study skills, as well as enrichment activities in subjects such as computers, English, arts and crafts, or sports. The Limudiah is giving Mevrat the skills to succeed in school, and the confidence of knowing that if she can master reading comprehension, writing and math skills now, she will have a solid foundation on which to build a better life for herself and her family.
NACOEJ is helping children like Mevrat acquire the educational tools that will enable them to succeed in school and ultimately secure their future in Israeli society.
JFGA allocated $20,000 to NACOEJ in FY04.
